One of only 12 Edo period castle tower keeps remaining in original condition, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle in Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture is the only Yamajiro (mountaintop castle) to have its keep intact, and is also the highest castle remaining. (The actual highest castle ever built was Koshosan Castle in Fukuoka Prefecture, atop a 750m high mountain!) The fact that it was built on such a high, steep sided mountain made it one of the most difficult to attack, and is also one of the reasons for its survival.
