Niwa Nagahide was born in Aichi, Owari Province (Modern-day Nagoya City’s Nishi-ku) in 1535. From his teens he served Oda Nobunaga directly, becoming one of Nobunaga’s most trusted senior vassals. Through his participation in the Oda clan’s major battles and his direct service to Oda Nobunaga, Nagahide worked his way through the ranks to become a senior retainer, and later a daimyo.
