The large, imposing gates of Matsusaka Castle in Mie Prefecture were guarded vigilantly by teams of fully armed Kishu Domain samurai. They would work in groups, guarding the important gates, day in, day out. A small guardhouse beside the huge, steel-plated wooden doors was their only form of shelter during their shifts, and where records of people coming and going were kept.
