Goshi 郷士 are generally seen as a lower class of Edo period samurai, usually found residing in rural villages, however, goshi were permitted to have a surname and to wear the daisho, pair of swords symbolic of the samurai class. The origins, clan history, and details such as birthplace of these rural samurai were well recorded in the same manner as highly ranked samurai. So how did they differ from full samurai?
