According to the Zohyou Monogatari, a survival manual for Ashigaru written in the early Edo period, ashigaru (foot soldiers) daily battlefield rations consisted of;1,082cc of rice grain per man.
361cc of miso for 10 men
180cc of salt for 10 men
1,804cc of water.
(Water was not to be taken from wells, in the fear that the enemy may have fouled or poisoned them. All water was first filtered through a silk bag containing dried apricot seeds.)
302g of firewood per man
Extra wood could be collected, and horse dung burned to repel insects.
