Hikone Castle in Japan’s central Shiga Prefecture is one of the most beautiful, most complete and most fascinating of Japan’s many samurai castles. Of the 170 castles in operation during the Edo period (1603-1868) just 12 castle keeps remain in original condition and of those 12, only five are currently designated National Treasures. Since 1952 Hikone Castle’s keep has been one of those five.
