Of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, two are located within Aichi Prefecture, Seto and Tokoname. The region has long been noted for its fine, rich clays and for the expert potters who created an array of fine ceramics. Even now across Japan, dinnerware, ceramics and pottery is known collectively as Seto-mono after the Seto region.

Of Japan’s rich clay firing technology and culture, the pottery known as Ofuke-yaki or Ofuke-ware was exceptionally prized.
