For the samurai, the larger the land and home you had, and the closer to the castle center you were located, the higher ranked you were. Nomura Denbei Nobusada was an official in the service of Maeda Toshiie, the first feudal Lord of the Kaga Domain (Ishikawa Prefecture) and Kanazawa Castle. Lord Nomura lived in a fine house, with a gorgeous garden, a large tract of land and with many servants at his command. His home, in the well-established samurai quarters of Nagamachi in the castle town further reflected his exalted position.
