Direct Retainers of the Shogun

Hatamoto originally referred to an elite group of Sengoku (Warring States period) samurai warriors who served directly under a commander on the battlefield advising and guarding him. In general, it refers to the status of samurai who served directly under the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period.
