Once again an extremely informative article, thank you. I have read of the Shogun's personal equerry (Osoba goyo toritsugi ) and wonder if this role would equate to the Otogishu, the subject of your post ? I wonder if you could clarify please ?

Hi Jock, thank you again for your kind comments. Re your question regarding the Osoba Goyo Toritsugi, this position appears to be different from the Otogishu. According to the Shogakukan Digital Daijisen, the Osoba Goyo Toritsugi was a key position that served the Shogun closely, conveying proposals and other matters directly to the Roju, and recommending their pros and cons, and was ranked second only to the Roju. This appears to be an official position, whereby the Otogishu was more of a companion and conversationalist. I would think that perhaps if the daimyo or shogun remained unsure about a certain matter, they may have brought it up in conversation with the Otogishu, but the Otogishu seem to have played a more entertaining role. I'll have a dig around and see what I can find for you. Cheers, Chris.
