The samurai would never be without a weapon. When entering a premises, be it a home, castle, an eating or entertainment establishment, the samurai — particularly during the Edo period — was expected to leave his katana at the entrance. His wakizashi, and at the very least, a dagger-like tanto (短刀) would be on his person at all times.
