The Battle of Kurikara was fought June 2, 1183 between the forces of the Minamoto (Genji) and their rival Taira (Heiki) clans at the Kurikara Pass in mountainous Etchu Province, modern day Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture. The Minamoto used superior tactics against the enemy, tricking, surrounding and defeating them using a frightening secret weapon — herds of panicking, flaming torch-fitted cattle!
