From the days of old, Omi Province, as modern-day Shiga Prefecture was known, was a vitally important area. Travelers and traders from the northern and eastern provinces made their way through Omi en-route to the Capital, Kyoto. Because of its central position, and because of the often used highways traversing the province, it was a strategically important area too. One of the many castles within Omi was the well-founded, defiant Odani Castle. Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and a host of other influential warlords had their sights on the infallible Odani.
