The Sakuradamon Incident occurred on March 24, 1860, when 18 samurai defectors from Mito and Satsuma domains ambushed and attacked the daimyo procession from Hikone Domain just outside the Sakuradamon Gates of Edo Castle and assassinated the Tairo, Ii Naosuke, in what is known as the Sakurada Incident.
