Tokugawa Ieyasu took possession of Edo Castle on this day in 1590. (The Japanese lunar date mentions 8th month, first day, which, by the Gregorian calendar, becomes August 30.) Ieyasu had been awarded the Kanto region following the Seige of Odawara by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The offer was seen by some as a means of shunting Ieyasu further away from political influences in Kyoto and Hideyoshi's base at Osaka. Nevertheless, Ieyasu accepted and set his headquarters at Edo Castle. Following the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Edo Castle would — area-wise — become one of the world's largest castles. Edo Castle is now the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
