On June 1, 1616, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first Shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty that ruled Japan for 260 years died aged 73. He had overcome a number of difficulties in his long life, having been held hostage by the rival Oda and Imagawa clans from the age of six to 19. Ieyasu had participated in a claimed 90 battles during his life, many of them major turning points in history such as Okehazama, Azukizaka, Mikatagahara Nagashino, Komaki Nagakute, and the most decisive Battle of Sekigahara to name but a few. With each adversity, he became stronger.
