One of the three main ways to bring down a samurai castle was by using overwhelming force. This was the reason for Yamanaka Castle’s demise in 1590. While no structures remain at Yamanaka Castle, instead the fascinating and unique moat system, superb defensive earthworks, the excellent layout of the baileys and grounds of a true Sengoku, or Warring States period mountaintop castle make it one of Japan’s most admired samurai castle sites.
