Recognised as one of the most powerful and formidable daimyo of the Sengoku period, and possibly the only serious challenge to Oda Nobunaga’s bid for supremacy, Uesugi Kenshin (February 18, 1530 – April 19, 1578) was born in Kasugayama Castle the forth son of Nagao Tamekage. His mother was Tora Gozen, the daughter of Fusakage Nagao of the Koshi Nagao clan, and lord of Echigo Suyoshi Castle. His childhood name Torachiyo was named for his birth in the Year of the Tiger, later becoming Kagetora, before accepting the Buddhist name, Kenshin.
