From where exactly this idea of "samurai dont use guns" comes from? Because absolutely all source material, all museums, all japanese historical movies/tv drama show its importance.
Its from the Last Samurai? I feel a little guilty because, even knowing how bad this movie is, was one of the mais reasons for my introduction in the japanese history.
If the Last Samurai was your introduction to samurai history, then that's not a bad thing at all. At least we got you hooked! LOL! There has long been the thought that the samurai shunned guns, as mentioned, it is an incorrect assumption. I have no idea where or when it started, but you're right, the movies, TV, various sources still point to it being a major weapon of importance. I also get annoyed seeing battle scenes where armoured samurai rush in with swords drawn,....and not a spear in sight! Thanks always for you comments Joao San!
